Hello!!! So excited to have you here. Debt of Time is an all time favorite of mine (I believe my bookmark just says “god tier”). I would love to know how long it took you to write and a little about your writing process if you don’t mind sharing (did you plot it all out or let the characters take the wheel?)
Thank you! I used to think DoT took about 9 months but then my original beta sent me a happy anniversary email because she found our original plot emails that were dated and it turned out from those emails to the eventual final chapter posted was six months—and I have no idea how it happened. I’d like to say demon possession but in all reality it might’ve been a severe long bipolar manic episode (legit) for me lol. I did plot out most of it as far as timeline went but it also changed a lot as the writing went. Originally it was estimated to be around 75 chapters for instance, and we all know how that turned out.
Do you have a particular Book of the four in DoT that was your favourite to write?
I’m so torn! Like asking to choose a favorite child! Book Four was probably the most fun to write because like... RELIEF and it’s just like a fanfic book, you know? But honestly I think my favorite is actually Book Three which is funny because it wasn’t supposed to exist originally. In the original plot, when Mia’s time-turner runs out of sand in the past, the next chapter was going to start right back in the future. But I had developed such a love for writing Remus and Sirius and I wanted to explore those years without her and how they coped through their grief. Plus, writing the Remus and Tonks relationship became my absolute favorite most fluffy thing ever!
What was your inspiration for DoT, and creating Mia?
Oh, I’m such a sucker for time travel. Like give me Back to the Future any day of the week. Avengers Endgame is my favorite MCU movie. I eat it all up! I had just binged a bunch of Hermione Marauders Era fics, so I wanted to do my own but I kept thinking, “Okay this author went left, what if I went right instead? How would the dominoes fall differently?” And I also made the initial “She can’t change anything. The deaths in the past have to still happen.” rule, in order to explore that level of grief. I wanted to kind of explore Hermione in a way of how would that same type of character change in a slightly different setting around slightly different friends but with the knowledge she has.
I LOVED DoT. I read it in a week and I am absolutely obsessed. However, I do struggle with time travel a bit and I was wondering if you could clarify Mia’s disappearance on Hermione’s original birth day, and how Mia was able to come back the second time Hermione was sent back in time? Sorry if that is a silly question, time travel just throws me for a loop sometimes.
So the theory there (and I once had it so scientifically explained somewhere backed by some astrophysicists that I forget the name of because it’s been years lol) is that a person cannot exist as two people in the same universe. So the moment that Hermione is born, Mia would cease to exist... maybe. They don’t actually know because Future Remus had the time turner / portkey charmed to activate in order to bring her back exactly on a certain date. Mia tells him to send her back when he does and also to bring her back when he does, so in reality, as much as the younger version of Remus thinks it’s all happenings because the time turner is running out of sand, it’s really because he programmed it to. Because she’s meant to come back to the future to them at that point since time is a loop.

Future Remus programs is to do that because his younger self saw it do that. So it’s kind of two time travel theories mixed together.
My question is similar to Hiss Hiss but about Presque Toujours Pur. First, I appreciate so much that you brought the adult order members into the horcrux hunt. I've always wondered why there wasn't more help from the adults that had more training and experience. Where did you get your inspiration from? I loved all of the twists and turns in this one. It kept me on my toes!
Omg it pisses me off so much that adults didn’t know about the horcruxes. Like... I have serious Dumblerage, y’all don’t even know. PTP was honestly inspired because I loved Regulus so much and I wanted to write him, but I also wanted to write a Pureblood Hermione story and it seemed like that would work well together, especially the back and forth and kind of doing some parallels in the various lives and experiences and differences in the wars and outcomes.
Out of your current WIPs, do you have a favorite? They're all gold, obviously, but is there one you'd just feel really satisfied to see completed over the others, just to see the story come to completion?
A Bit of Sky gives me the most satisfaction to write because it’s the easiest to jump between the character’s POV, and knowing it’ll be shorter (plus it’s mooostly plotted out to the end). Reclamation is wonderful to write but daunting as hell because I know it’ll be just a few 100k shy of DoT length by the end since it will span all 7 years of Hogwarts at least.
I love how you write Remus. You do a great job of balancing the his gentle side and sarcastic side while also exploring his emotional maturity as a teen. When writing characters like him that we see less of in canon do you create character sheets or use any tools to help you flesh them out? Or do you just have a sense of their personality/voice in their head? Also do you have any plans to return to Bit of Sky or Misplaced Moony in the near future? I’m so glad to see Bit of Sky is a favorite of yours to write. Both are amazing Remione stories and a different take on the typical time travel stories, which I love. (No pressure to answer that last question, just a curiosity as they are both so well written and I will be happily reading!)
I desperately want to return to all of my WIPs and I frequently reread them and go back to the plot outlines to spruce up. I have a lot of health concerns right now that I’m trying to focus on first unfortunately that are keeping me from writing, though, and it definitely sucks, but I refuse to throw in that towel. As for the characters, I don’t really have character sheets. Remus always came naturally to me. Remus and Harry are characters I’ve always identified with the most (which is funny considering that I’ve written Hermione the most frequently lol). Remus is like the adult voice in my head and Harry is the younger voice in my head. Sirius is 100% based off of my husband’s sense of humor (to give you an idea of what I put up with every day lol).
What is your favorite OTP. I know on your Facebook group you mention your real life Sirius.
Omg this changes so often. Harmony is probably my comfort OTP. I think I reread Keira Marcos fics like their anti anxiety medications; at least once every six months or so. But also Drarry. Bixgirl1 writes just the most amazing Drarry.
When you feel "stuck" creatively, what is your process or how do you handle that?
I back away from my work entirely. I can’t force it. I’ll do something else like binge a show on Netflix, or reread a favorite story, do something else creatively like billet journal or handlettering. I give it time and then go back. If I’m still stuck then I’ll try and force it by saying “Just one sentence, then I can walk away.” And one sentence is fine. Come back tomorrow and do it again. Of course taking my own advice sometimes can be hard lol.
For your writing process, do you write chronologically or do you write certain key scenes before you get to them?
Mostly chronological. Like I would say 95% of the time. The only instance I can say for certain I didn’t, was in DoT. After writing most of Book One I was inspired for the scene in, I think chapters 129-131 where Ron, Harry, and Ginny find out about Mia and Remus and the hilarity that ensues. The dialogue popped into my head and I didn’t want to forget it, so I wrote the whole scene immediately and just saved it for later, then went back in. I think I also skipped a death scene for several weeks because I wasn’t in an emotional headspace for it.
I absolutely love so many of your fics. For Soul Scars, do you have a favorite pairing or story that you wrote for it?
Oh man... so many come to mind! Blaise was so fun to write! Because his friends were so mean and it was so funny, and eventually he just kind of went with it until he realised it was a prank... but I also loved Pansy’s HEA. Nope! Wait! I know exactly which one! Minerva’s! Yep! For years it was honestly my favorite thing I had ever written.
DOT leans heavily into the Time Travel trope. Which trope is your favourite to write?
Definitely the time travel trope. It’s also the one I’ve written the most, I think.
I wanted to ask how do you organize yourself to be productive and write? Do you follow a routine? And what helps you get inspired?
When I WAS organised, I would wake up and write immediately. Like that was the first thing I did. That was my routine, get it all out of my head immediately. Unfortunately my schedule no longer allows that, so my routine is just kind of ... meh. Getting inspired is easier for sure: read. Reading fanfic makes me fall back in love with the characters all over again.
Hello!!! I really enjoyed Présque Toujours Pur especially with how Draco and Regulus mirrored each other. I’ve never really thought about how they could be so similar when thinking about canon. I was wondering if there was anything that inspired you in canon? What was your thought process like for those scenes?
The frustration of having everything in canon told from Harry’s POV and yet we know from that that Regulus at 17 became a hero, went through hell, and died in that hellish lake. But we also know through that POV that Draco’s appearance becomes gaunt, he cries in that bathroom, he looks terrified, he drops his wand when tasked to kill Dumbledore. The parallels were just so THERE for me. Honestly, I really didn’t even want to write a Dramione. I really didn’t. I loved exploring the Pureblood Hermione angle with Regulus on its own, but omg the parallels with Draco were too good to ignore. If I hadn’t JUST come off writing DoT, PTP might’ve been longer and I would’ve explored the Dramione more and put in more growth there (but I honestly didn’t have it in me at the time, and frankly the romance was secondary to the family drama of the story—not that the Dramione readers would listen—so yeah.
Hi Shaya! One of things I really enjoyed about PTP was the Regulus/Marlene content, I was quite invested in this relationship and thought it was well-developed in the flashbacks and diary entries. Did you always have Marlene in mind as Hermione's mother or were there other characters you also considered?
It was always going to be Marlene. One thing I love to do is taking something my readers are set on and turning it around. I made them HATE Marlene in DoT, and then love her in PTP, which I just thought was the funniest thing ever. I like a good challenge. I get a lot of “I’ve never considered this ship until this story” comments, and those are some of my favorites.)
You have several WIPs and finished works, how do you keep the different characterisations of the same character straight in your head?
Honestly? Sometimes it’s a struggle. I very rarely write the stories simultaneously. Usually before I start writing, especially if there’s been a large time gap between writing, I will reread what’s already been posted/written in order to get back into that specific universe.
DoT was the first fanfic I read, so big thanks for introducing me to the world of fanfic! Reclamation is a stunning piece of work so far! And I love it! My question is..... If you could change one thing in canon what would it be and why?
Omg just one? Ugh.......... Sirius’s death. It took too much away from Harry. And that’s my non political answer cough.
I truly appreciated and loved Safe Word is Devil's Snare. You were completing it at a time when I needed to see kink representation in fanfic. My question is about Neville. What was your process for writing Neville's character as you did as well as his back story? Was there a particular reason or inspiration for choosing Neville as the main male for Safe Word? I always love Neville written as a baddass. It is one of my favorite stories and probably one of the few NevMiones that I go and reread. I honestly reread all your stories at least once a year.
I wrote Safe Word as an anti 50 Shades because it was like in the movies at the time (and my sister was obsessed) and it was driving me bonkers. I have friends in the bdsm community and so I heard about a lot of problems happening because of that series/movie where people were entering abusive situations thinking “Okay but it’s just like 50 shades so this is fine” type stuff and... no. So I did so much research and interviews with people actively involved in bdsm for Safe Word. I wanted to write Neville (because I mean... Matt Lewis) but also the character is just so stable compared to others in the series, and so I wanted it to have that as a base. Like here’s this sweet, loveable, trusting, GOOD Neville and yet he’s got this naughty side to him. Bdsm doesn’t have to be this fucked up dude that beats women to get his rocks off that you need to fix in order to love type of thing. Neville entered the story already “fixed”.
Wow hello! I just happened to see that this was happening, and I wanted to let you know how much I love DoT. I read it for the first time a few months ago, and I've since read it again (and the reread my favorite parts )
Honestly, what I love the most about it was how satisfying a reread it is because the story is so airtight and at least I couldn't find a single loophole. So I guess I just wanna say thank you?

One of my favorite scenes is Mia's reunion with Tilly. During the whole 4th book I was thinking, "okay but what happened to Tilly?? Is she still alive?? Will we get a conclusion to her story?" And YOU DID NOT DISAPPOINT.
Omg thank you! One of my favorite things in writing DoT was closing as many of those plot holes as I could find lol! And Tilly! Oh, my Tilly! Did you know that every background character is based on canon except the house-elves? They are the only actual original characters!
That's one of the things I appreciated about outlet. You made it a point to differentiate between appropriate and inappropriate in regards to BDSM.
Yes! And we did that on purpose too. Safe Word was adults who knew what they were doing, and Outlet was teenagers who had zero idea and were making mistakes.
You mentioned that you like reading for inspiration. Are there genres/tropes in particular that you love to read for either pleasure or inspiration? Books and/or fanfic
I’m a sucker for marriage law, and I have no idea why. But also I just love a good hurt/comfort fic. I’ll also read anything that Olivie Blake writes. I worship the ground she writes on. I love a story with good humor in it even if there’s drama. I mostly stick to fanfic, honestly. Outside of fanfic I actually mostly read nonfiction.
One thing that has always stood out to me about DoT was the way that you wrote the Black family, in that they are unfiltered and uninhibited, and willing (even eager) to push boundaries. I really loved that you made that more of a family thing rather than a Sirius-specific thing. I'm just curious what your reasoning was behind that choice, and what you felt that shared trait was indicative of.
When I was writing the Black family (and even reading about them) I was constantly reminded of the Targaryen family from A Song of Ice and Fire. And I even gave a little nod to it. There’s a line in the show (not sure if it’s in the books) and when a Targaryen is born, it’s a flip of the coin if they turn out insane, and I said something similar about a flip of the galleon for the Blacks. But if you look at them they’re all just like boiling kettles, except some are about to explode like Bellatrix and Sirius, and then you’ve got others who’ve got the lid on too tight like Narcissa and Regulus. I just loved this idea of like this weird fire in them and it has to come out in strange ways or else maybe they go crazy lol . Plus I mean... they married their cousins.
You have an impressive list of awards and nominations for your fics. Do you now feel pressure to have your new works be as good as those. How do deal with that (lack of) pressure?
It’s a lot of pressure. When I wrote DoT, I wrote it just for me, I was new to fanfic and it just blew up. The fandom is a wonderful community and I have met my best friends through here, but I have had to avoid specific areas as well for my own mental health. I deal with a lot of imposter syndrome, and anytime I get recognised for my work my first instinct is excitement but it’s immediately followed by regret and intense anxiety because authors I love and know didn’t get awards or recognition I believe was deserved more than me. It’s a struggle. It’s something I’m working through and also one of the reasons that most of my works are currently on hiatus.
This may be a strange one, but DoT was sort of baby's first Wolfstar for me (and I know many others.) Like, I knew the ship existed, but I had never really been interested in it before I read your work -- which isn't even actually Wolfstar, it just includes this really close and intense dynamic between them and Mia. Was that dynamic something intentional/something you were aware of? Or was it just something that came about naturally through the course of the characters developing as you wrote?
Definitely intentional. While it wasn’t romantic, I wanted to show love there between two men that was more than friendship. I also wanted to do a love triangle that wasn’t toxic at all (which REALLY pissed off a lot of male readers so... bonus lol). I’m also a firm believer that Sirius is pansexual, and that’s a hill I’m willing to die on lol
I know that you've written Hermione with each of the marauders. Were there particularly unique challenges or rewarding moments to writing Storm of Yesterday or Boy in the Bookshelf? Storm of Yesterday was my entry way into James/Hermione and I get into that rabbit hole of a ship some weeks.
Storm of Yesterday was so difficult just because of the headspace, but also so rewarding! Honestly I think of all my stories, I’ve reread that one the most just because I feel the most satisfied with it by the end.
I always have trouble finding a premise for a story, but your resumé is incredibly diverse. Different pairings, different eras, canon (non-)compliant. How do the plot bunnies come to you?
Honestly sometimes I just take a trope and a pairing I haven’t done and just mix it up. For instance with A Bit of Sky I took something I have done (Time Travel) and threw in a trope I wanted to try (Wolf Mates) but then I switched up a pairing that we rarely see in the time travel trope, especially Marauders Era (Drarry) and I kind of think “Okay, how would the other characters even react to this?” And from there I think of those reactions and build from those scenes. So you get Remus/Hermione fun stuff, then you get Harry meeting his parents, you get everyone reacting to Draco being a Death Eater, but you also deal with Lily and James learning about Harry’s childhood, etc etc.
Do you have a favourite fic that doesn't get the attention you feel it deserves?
The closest would maybe be my one shots? I loved writing Love the Way You Lie. It’s so toxic!
I really loved your redemption arc for Draco in DoT. Do you think that JKR's depiction of Draco and Sirius could've had this same interesting relationship had they had the opportunity?
I think the opportunity was definitely there but we know she had her whole ending planned out to... whatever. I’m still super annoyed that she thinks we all love Draco just because of Tom Felton.
You have experience with writing quite a few different characters from the HP series. Which one of them (if any) did you find most challenging to write and which one(s) came easily?
Remus and Harry are the easiest for me. Sirius too, but sometimes he takes over and is hard to rein in lol. Snape is a HUGE struggle to write, same with the Weasley twins. Those characters almost have their own language, and I do not speak it. When I write them in stories, I usually have betas go over the sections with a fine tooth comb or even have another fic author who specialises in writing those characters beta for me.
Alright, one more for you before we let you enjoy the rest of your weekend. Coffee is a writing staple for me. Do you have an elixir of choice as you work?
I’m a tea girl! I’m American born, so a good iced black is great, but I should have been born in England because my favorite thing in the world is either a hot cup of Earl Grey or just good old English breakfast. <3
