Maybe an easy one: of the fics you’ve written, which is your favorite and why?
Hi! I wouldn't necessarily say easy
I usually figure Nocturnus is one of my favourites because I liked the relationship/plot development, and I put more into it than any other fic I've written. But honestly, I have two shorter favourites that I like because they're emotional and flangsty, and those are Turning Tides, and In Search of Sunrise. So... I can never really narrow it down to one I guess.
SPEAKING OF NOCTURNUS which i can't flail my love enough at you over that one. I read it while it was a WIP and adore it. How on earth did you come up with all of that? I absolutely adored the world and character buliding along with the OC's you gave us in that!
I have this kind of wonky analogy I like to use for worldbuilding of a seedling which sprouts from the initial seed - a post-war magical dynasty - and elaborates from there into the basic premise, then all the details sort of grow out from there. When Nocturnus was first born, it was very basic, and a lot of the major elements - the lunar magic, the opposing orders, a lot of the intricacies of the plot - really just unfolded naturally. I like to plan certain things in advance, but usually by the end my outlines don't look much like the final product because I like to allow things to develop organically.
hahaha follow up question, which scene was your favorite to write from it?
I just had to track it down, but I think my absolute favourite was the scene where they're gearing up for war, Hermione finds Draco playing the piano, and it's a very emotional scene between them (end of chapter 34). Although the initial piano scene, where he has his crown on crooked, was one of my favourites as well. Can you tell I'm a sucker for an emotionally anguished Draco playing the piano?
Do you outline a story before writing it, or do you write and let the plot kind of take you where it goes?
I like to figure myself as a plantser, so a bit of both. For a one short or even some short multi-chapters, I just let a lot of things unfold as they will. Long stories I'll at least make a jot form outline of a lot of the major elements and plot points I want to hit, and at the very least an early game outline. But I don't outline every chapter, every scene because I find so much changes. I'll usually keep a bit of a file of things I want to include "later" but I like to allow a lot of flexibility with character and plot development.
of the things you keep in the file to "include later," if they're not included in this particular fic, do you use them in other fics ever?
Not really - or at least I haven't. They'll often be threads of things I want to come back to, so I jot them down so I don't forget, and they're often specific details for that fic and wouldn't be relevant in a different context. ETA: I never delete content though, so I might come back and snatch certain ideas from things I never published if they might make sense in something new.
Hi! I was wondering, other than Draco & Hermione, who's your favorite character, and why is it Theodore Nott?
Honestly though, most of the time I like Theo more than Draco and Hermione combined. Kidding (sort of) but I think anyone who knows me knows my fondness for Theo lol. He's a fun character, he has the aristocratic Slytherin vibes, but he's such a blank slate that he's just so cool to play around with. I've been featuring him heavily in most fics for a few years now, and he changes a little based on the circumstances, but he's always got hints of the same personality. I just like making him sarcastic, clever, and a bit of a shit but also a great friend.
What is your favorite trope to write and your favorite to read?
Favourite to write is probably post-war angst -> flangst. I love exploring the angsty side of a post-traumatic environment. But I also need those happy, sweet moments in there too. I'm a softie for super tropey stuff so I love reading fun tropes like fake dating, forced proximity, co-workers, oh no there's only one bed!, and that sort of thing. But honestly it sort of depends on the day because sometimes I'd rather write the silly tropes and read the angst. shrug
Is there a point in their lives that you really love to write? I.e. 8th year, characters when they’re 50+, or in their 20s?
I love 8th year/immediately post-war, for some of the reasons above, but I really love writing them in their mid to late twenties. They're a little more established in life, have left some of their struggles from the war behind, but their lives are still a work in progress and I like to shake things up lol.
You’ve written SO MUCH over the years (thanks for that). Do you have a list of plots that you’ll pull from when you’re ready to write a new story, or is each story it’s own inspiration that hits and you write them as they hit you?
So... I usually have way more ideas than time to write. I have dozens of files and a lot of them are partial, just started, or left off at some weird, precarious point. I usually don't publish a story until it's completed (if it's short) or I have a pretty good idea of how the end is all going to play out, for a longer WIP. My mind is easily distracted and it's rare for me to sit and write through an entire long story, so I hop around a lot. Unfortunately it means I have a bunch of ideas waiting their turn, but it keeps my mind going and usually prevents me from getting too stuck. I tend to find the more I write, the more ideas I have (which is why I write so much)
What's your favorite thing about fandom?
I love writing as a creative outlet, and reading, but probably the community. I started reading Dramione fic in 2003 and ducked in and out over the years, but never really had any fandom friends until I came back in 2017 and stumbled across the fb groups, then tumblr, discord, twitter, etc. It's fun having people to share in the hobby, bounce ideas around, and really just to have this great fandom space. I think in HP and particularly Dramione where I spend more of my time, we have a massive wealth of talent, and it's fun to learn from others.
For "Distance", are the elements about the curse and the history aspect all your own creation or did you pull from anything that already existed? (AND ALSO, the banter from them in that was constantly cracking me up and I loved it!)
Oh thanks! I had a lot of fun with the enemies to lovers dynamics in that one. Most of the actual history of the Indus Valley, the sites they visited, etc. was all factual history. That story was probably the most heavily researched of anything I've written. But all the magical elements of it - the figure, the curse, and how it all played out, including the departure of the Indus people, were all made up for the fic. I debated different civilisations, but I loved that there's still such an air of mystery about what actually happened in the Indus Valley when they were so prosperous.
totally a throwback, but Proximate is one of my favorite fluff-nuggets to read and re-read and re-read. Any interesting behind-the-scenes things about the process of writing it?
Oh! okay yes definitely. So Proximate was one of the first stories I wrote when I came back to fandom in 2017, and it was originally meant to be a quick, silly neighbours/friends with benefits fic. A lot of the deeper plotlines that came into play re. Astoria's illness, Theo's involvement, Hermione's research etc. evolved from nowhere. ALSO it was the first story I ever wrote proper smut and let me tell you I was terrified. Back in the day fade to black was so normalized that I didn't think much of it until I realized that if I was writing a friends with benefits fic, there should be some benefits?
I guess I do have a question! Sorry if it’s been asked. But you’ve been writing for so long & have written so many fan faves. Do you ever get in your head and struggle? If so how do you work through that? I feel like I’m my own worst enemy when it comes to writing.
Oh gosh, all the time. My poor alpha is always fielding my self-deprecating thoughts and meanderings. A popular one is telling myself I've probably already written all the good stories I'm going to come up with and the classic "why do I still bother". I think it's soooo so sos osososo easy to get caught up in our heads, especially because writing is, by and large, such an isolated activity. Sometimes I'll just dip out of whichever story is causing me grief and write something fun and short to keep the momentum going, sometimes I'll take a step back and allow myself some lighter days, and honestly sometimes I just have to push through and tell myself that garbage on the page is better than nothing. I do think that's a personal thing though - some people prefer to step away entirely. I've just learned if I walk away I'll struggle more getting back to it.
Are there other ships you’re interested to explore in the future other than Dramione and Nottpott?
That's lovely they left a question! Those are my big two for sure, but I do like to play around with other ships. I'm posting a 9 or 10 chapter Theomione fic atm which I've quite enjoyed writing. I love Hansy, Panville, Theoville, Haphne, erm... honestly, I'll give a lot of ships a try. I really enjoyed a recent Pansy/Oliver I read. I sometimes ship/write Hermione with a select handful of characters beyond Draco, but I have a hard time seeing Draco with anyone else, for whatever reason. The exception being Draco/Theo in a Dreomione triad. ETA: I usually play around with side ships more than main pairings.
Tea or coffee?
Tea.... usually. I like a coffee sometimes. But I'm usually a fruity herbal tea person.
What’s the best/worst writing advice you’ve ever come across?
Oooh this is tricky because a lot of advice is useful for different elements of writing. I don't know if it's necessarily advice, but I love the thought that, even if something's already been written, it hasn't been written by you. In fanfic we deal a lot in tropes, and they're tropes because people like them, but there is a lot of overlap. A lot of writing advice is really technical, and there are always things I'm tweaking in my writing - pronoun usage, adverbs, sentence structure, showing v telling, etc. and it's all useful. I guess I'll go back to one of the best ways to improve is to always read and write and read and write and... Offhand, I can't think of bad writing advice I've heard. Even if it wasn't all valuable to me, it could be beneficial to someone else I guess?
Oh gosh, hello! I have read many of your works! I finished Distance last month and I was really interested in how the historical elements tied together. Have you always been interested in history or do you like it more from a writing standpoint?
Hi, thank you! Oddly, I'm not a huge history buff ha, but more so ancient history than modern I guess. I love things like ancient civilisations and learning more about that. I enjoyed incorporating the historic elements into Distance, but in general I prefer to create more of the worldbuilding myself. The inspiration behind writing Distance actually came from a really niche, hilarious (I think) source. In ancient Mesopotamia, there was this fella called Ea-nasir who ran a lot of shady business dealings, sold people low grade copper, etc. to the point where people carved their complaints with him into stone tablets and his history was preserved. Idk how that led to a story about Dramione in the Indus valley, but sometimes the seeds take hold in bizarre ways
Is there anything you really want to write but haven't yet?
Honestly, so many things. I feel like I'll never write all the ideas I want to. I want to write a fully fleshed out time travel fic, There is a small, hidden part of myself that wouldn't mind trying my hand at some darker content, but I think the voldy wins AU shoes are mighty big and I don't know if I have it in me. So if I went down that road it would have to be something else as the premise I think.
OOO that would be fun to read dark content from you! Chronos Historia.......you absolute genius. I'd love to hear about your process for creating the founders and their characterization? i ADOOORRED godric and salazar's interactions. honestly, i loved all 4 of them!
well not CREATING them, but your version of them
So... really, my main motivation behind creating the founders was to show them early on, before strife grew between them, before Salazar left, etc. I really just wanted to show them as more than their respective house characteristics, if that makes sense. I thought Godric and Salazar would have been friends, I wanted Helga to be fun and a little feisty, and Rowena has all this love for her daughter. I had a lot of fun writing them, but it was tricky to give them their own personalities but still keep them true to what we know of them. I had to fudge a couple things re. Rowena's timeline, but I thought it still worked out okay.
Popping in! I’ve got 2 questions! 1) where do you draw inspiration from? 2) since you’ve started reading/writing, what changes have you seen in Dramione both in fic content, the kinds of writers posting, and the fandom in general? It’s been over 15 years correct?
Hiii! 1) Honestly everywhere! Music is a big one - all it takes is one line in a song and my brain is going. I draw a lot of inspiration from content I read or see just in the world (not to take, but just thinking of something and then a new idea forms). I'm always really cautious that what I'm reading isn't too similar to what I'm working on because I never want elements to subconsciously slip in. 2) It has been 18 years, though I've gone many years completely out of fandom for whatever life circumstances. The writing quality, honestly. It's wild the sort of content we're given to read for free, and there's something for literally everyone's tastes. I always read on FFN growing up, where things weren't as spicy, so I think there's been a shift towards more explicit/kink heavy content. AO3 has given writers a lot of freedoms with tagging, etc. in that regard. I think people almost take it more seriously now? If that makes sense. People used to insert silly little author's notes into the body of a chapter, and ofc that's a generalization, but I think a lot of the people who grew up with the books are still reading/writing and that maturity shows. There's also a new wave of consumers/creators that's been interesting to watch.
What about Draco/hermione characterizations? How have they changed? Also you’re wonderful and I love your stories.
And friendships with side characters? I remember from it’s always the quiet ones Blaise was always a thing.
It's tricky, because the characterisations have always varied from one fic to the next, but before the end of the series, I guess there were different expectations? It's when the Head boy/girl trope became so big, because we genuinely believed it would happen? And my memory is a little foggy, but I think like with the maturity aspect, the characterisations have deepened, become more realistic, darker, there's a lot of the post-war post-trauma psyche that we see in them. If anything a lot of stories were more lighthearted? But ofc this is generalisations too.
What do you feel is your most underrated story?
One of my personal favourites that I've written is a 9-chapter piece called Turning Tides, post-war/pre-8th year, where Dramione both leave London and wind up meeting at the same small fishing town. I know some people quite enjoy it but it never got a lot of attention and even though I wrote it a few years ago I still like it. It's very angsty/hopeful.
On that note, which is the story you feel the proudest of? Hi by the way, you're awesome
Hi, thank you! It sort of feels a bit premature to say, but the WIP I'm publishing right now only has 11 chapters up so far, but 41 written, and I think I'm really proud of it. It only has a few chapters left so it's close to completed. I've written a lot of plot-heavy fics, and Adrift is sort of my take on a more emotionally driven story. Hermione's lost her memory, Draco's an auror stuggling with his job, his parents, his past.
do you have a favorite (or more than one) favorite fic in the fandom?
Oh gosh lol. Yeah... a few. I have to admit I haven't read a lot of the "classics", and partly because I've been in and out of fandom a lot, but in the past couple years I've focused more of my time on writing and my TBR is frightening at this point. Some of my favourites are Parade of the Sun by everythursday, Wait and Hope by mightbewriting, How the Light Gets in by potato4, Gravity by floorcoaster, The Nietzsche Classes by Beringae, Jealousy by rainsrabble... honestly, there are a lot and most of them aren't the super well known list.
On a completely different note, if Draco had a favorite animal, what you do think it would be?
I think Draco likes big cats like a cheetah or a lynx or something. But he's also really fond of dragons because they're his namesake.
How long will your WIP be? And what's next after that?
Adrift should land around 175-180kish based on how much is left. I have a few smaller things I'm picking at in the background, but I'm really excited about my next full-length story. It's called The Hours Immaterial (may change) and the basic premise is that Hermione is a time unspeakable, and Draco is sort of morally ambiguous, slightly unhinged from too much time travel/illegal time manipulation using a time turner that Theo built (because I like to nod at canon before I rip it to shreds). Hermione needs Draco's help to access some trouble in the past without causing a massive ripple, and he needs her protection to stay out of Azkaban for his crimes. So it's a very reluctant/untrusting partnership that will get really twisty-convoluted as it goes.
Omg what kind of dog do you have
a weirdo mix! best guess is a chihuahua/border collie cross.
Hiii! What inspired the idea for Chronos Historia?
Hiii Lisa! Honestly, I just hadn't seen a lot of stories that featured the founders in the original years of Hogwarts and I wanted to throw Dramione back to see how they would deal with it. Then once I had the timeline sort of figured I knew I wanted to have Helena and the Baron in there as a sort of parallel to Draco and Hermione, but also a contrast to the ways where Draco's allowed to be himself in the past without all the weight he's been carrying from the war. So their story sort of just came about from there, and everything else with Rowena.
I know myself and others have look to you and admired your advice around world building. If you were asked to provide writing advice on a topic of your choosing, but you couldn't pick world building, what topic would you pick?
This is tough ha ha. Plotting? Is plotting too close to worldbuilding? Pacing maybe?
Honestly, plotting isn't even what I mean, but like developing a well-rounded story I guess. Keeping a balance between content, narrative, dialogue, description, etc. Idk. It's tricky because I don't really consider myself good enough to tell anyone else how to do things? I only know what's worked for me over the years.
What's your favorite thing to do in fandom that isn't writing?
It depends on the day. Some days I just like a short fic or a one shot, other times I sink into a long fic although my concentration for anything too long has been shot for a little while now. Other times I just like to engage with others on discord, fb, twt.
How much fan interaction do you have? Do you want more? Less? How do you judge how a story of yours is received (like what marker do you use)?
Oh I'm honestly happy to talk to anyone haha? If someone enjoyed a story I wrote, I'm always thrilled to hear it. That said, I'm a bit socially awkward so I know I can be weird to talk to sometimes lol. And... that's a little tricky I guess. I used to have a larger readership on FFN but over the last few years it's shifted to AO3 so the numbers often don't align from one to the next. I guess kudos/comments or faves/reviews is a good metric for whether a story's been well received or not.
Do you ever experience times where dialogue does not come easy to scene? If so, how have you worked through that?
Sometimes, but once I'm already in the middle of a scene, my brain usually has to work harder to keep the actual scene flowing than to construct the dialogue within it. If anything, sometimes dialogue comes first. I try to keep dialogue dependent on whoever's saying it, rather than making it sort of blanketed across all characters. Like Draco I think speaks quite formally for the most part, and Hermione is proper and wordy, whereas someone like Harry is a little more informal. But if Draco's speaking with his boss, his tone will be different than if he's talking to Hermione. That sort of thing idk
I'm cooking dinner as I follow, so what's your favorite meal to eat!
Honestly, I'm super low key about food. My ideal would be a plate of some raw veggies or salad, some cheese/cottage cheese/something along those lines, some form of potato. I'd pick at easy snack foods 90% of the time if I could.
Okay! Hiiii.
Draco in glasses, rolled-sleeves Draco, or Draco in grey sweatpants?
heck, J. does the draco in glasses have a collared shirt with the potential to roll up his sleeves later?
How about a fic question next then lol I've been itching to pick up Ruins because Dramioneo is my OTP, but life got in the way ofc. So not specifically about that fic, but triads in general...any advice for writing them? All those limbs and pronouns especially!!
Oh my goshhhh this is so valid. triad logistics is very interesting. The Ruins was my first triad smut and... yeah lol. You just really need to visualise where everyone is and what they're all doing LOL. I was lucky the lovely @curly_kay was willing to pick through the Ruins smut and point out where things didn't make sense. Pronouns during triads and even m/m fics can be difficult, but I always err on the side of, use the name if it could be confusing. I'd rather say Theo 8 times in a row than have the reader sitting there trying to figure out of I'm referring to Theo or Harry because IMO it's one of the fastest ways to draw a reader out of the scene is if they're confused.
